Course fully booked for now

This is a two-part introductory course to deliver the basics of the potter’s wheel; you’ll learn basic techniques of centering, throwing and trimming pot’s. The course will take place over two Tuesday evening’s, for three hours each evening.

During the first week you will be learn the basics of how to center clay on the wheel. We’ll make some basic pot shapes to get started and to get a feel for how the clay reacts on the wheel. Then after a tea break, we’ll work towards throwing a specific bowl shape.

On the second Tuesday evening you’ll choose your best bowls to finish and turn. During this session you’ll learn how to turn (carve the bases of) these pots, a whole new skill and a lovely part of the process. We will teach you how to decorate the bowls using slip decoration techniques. For this bowl making workshop we’ll try to leave the bases of the bowls fairly thick during the throwing week. This will allow us to ‘turn’ a foot-ring into the base during the second session; this gives a lovely, proper finish to the pots.

The finished, turned and decorated bowls will then be dried, bisque-fired, coated in clear glaze by us and then glaze fired before being ready for collection, all of which is included in the price.

There is a maximum of 6 students per course ensuring that everyone gets a nice bit of attention while learning to throw.

Due to the level of concentration and hand-eye coordination that is required to master the wheel, these courses are for people aged 16 and over.

Tuesdays from 6pm to 9.15pm with a 15 minute tea break.

Cost includes all materials, firings, etc. for work made during the class times.
