This is a day-long introductory course to deliver the basics of wheel work and to get you started on your throwing career!
In the first session you will be getting a feel for how the wheel works and how the clay responds. You will start to get used to movements of centering clay and make a basic pot shape, whatever that might be! Don’t worry, everything will be broken down right from the beginning. In the afternoon you will be guided through the process of making bowls before finally making an egg cup!
These courses work well because you are building on the skills that you learn in one class after another; the day gives you a good basic understanding of how clay reacts on the wheel.

It should be noted that due to the nature of clay and drying times, these day courses can only cover the first part of the process: throwing pots. Turning (carving and shaping the bases of pots when they are ‘leather’ hard) is an equally important skill and aspect of wheel-work. The decoration process in our studio is carried out using slips (liquid, coloured clay) and this is also applied at the leather-hard stage. Taking all of this into account, at the end of a day-course students will have the option of booking back on to a separate, one-day course in order to cover these skills and to therefore complete the whole process.
If you choose not to continue, pots that you make throughout the day will be quickly trimmed by us, fired and glazed in a clear glaze before being ready to collect at a later stage, usually around six weeks after the course finishes. They will still be fit for use but will remain the colour of the clay which is a nice off-white, cream colour.

These classes are fully focused on learning the potter’s wheel.

There are a maximum of 7 students per course ensuring that everyone gets a nice bit of attention while learning how to throw pots!

Due to the level of concentration and hand-eye coordination that is required to master the wheel, these courses are for people aged 16 and over.

The course runs from 10am to 5pm with an hour lunchbreak and a 20 minute coffee break.

The cost includes all materials, firings, etc. for work made during the class times.

Due to the small class numbers of 7 students per course, we are unable to change, swap or reschedule classes after you have booked. There is no refund for students who are unable to attend classes. If you have booked on to the course but are no longer able to attend, you can nominate someone else to attend the course in your place.

Due to the costs involved with putting on this course, if less than three people book on it may need to be postponed. In the unlikely event of this happening you will be offered another place on another course. If this does not suit you, you will be offered a full refund.
