Description

If you would like a more easy going introduction to pottery, spread out over two Sunday afternoons, this might suit you. The course will introduce you to all of the techniques of throwing over two afternoon’s: a throwing day on the first Sunday from 1 to 5.30pm and then back the following Sunday to finish your work on a slightly shorter ‘turning’ and decorating day.

Throughout the first afternoon you will get an understanding of how to center clay as well as the basics of throwing pots on the wheel.
In this first session you will be getting a feel for how the wheel works and how the clay responds. You will start to get used to centering clay and make a basic pot shape, whatever that might be! Later, you will be guided through the process of throwing mugs.
These courses work well because you are building on the skills that you learn in one class straight after another; the afternoon gives you a solid understanding of how clay reacts on the wheel.

The following Sunday is spent learning the skill of ‘turning’ (or ‘trimming’: carving and shaping the bases of pots when they are ‘leather-hard’), an equally important skill and aspect of wheel-work. The decoration process in our studio is carried out using slips (liquid, coloured clay) and this is also applied at the leather-hard stage. During this second session you’ll decorate your mugs with slip before attaching handles.

All of the pots that are made during the course times will be dried, bisque-fired and then glazed by us in a clear glaze before they are glaze-fired, all of which is included in the price of the course. This process can take up to six weeks to complete after the course finishes; they will then be ready to collect and to use!

These classes are fully focused on learning the potter’s wheel.

There are a maximum of 6 students per course ensuring that everyone gets a nice bit of attention while learning how to throw pots!

Due to the level of concentration and hand-eye coordination that is required to master the wheel, these courses are for people aged 16 and over.

The course runs from 1 to 5.30pm on the first Sunday (with a tea break) and then from 1 to 4pm on the following Sunday.

The cost includes all materials, firings, etc. for work made during the class times.
